Advanced Poetry Writing Workshop
The poetry writing workshops are at the heart of the
Getaway. Each morning the poets gather for an hour or so to
discuss a packet of poems. Then Peter, the Getaway’s founder,
gives one of his imaginative, challenging assignments and sends
you off to write. His unique prompts will encourage and inspire
you to produce exciting new work. After lunch you will share
your new piece in a feedback session led by one of the
experienced faculty who will help identify your work's virtues
and offer suggestions to strengthen its weaknesses. Because
these groups are small, you will receive positive attention to
help your work mature.
Optional add-on for
Advanced Poetry Writing Participants
Experienced poets are invited to work with our Special Guests during the
workshop sessions on Saturday or Sunday afternoon or Monday
morning. Bring a poem in progress (30 line maximum) or the
day's assignment to be critiqued. Enrollment is on a
first-come, first-served basis and is limited to one of
these intensive sessions with each Special Guest. There
is a $100 surcharge for each add-on session which is limited
to 10 participants.

Our Participants Say it Best
"This conference is a gift. It permits a writer to take risks
without concern for impressing or competing. It gave me the
space to imagine and experiment. This is a community that is
generous and encouraging while also being honest. A great
