Boardwalk Empire Creator to Speak at
the Getaway

We are excited to announce that writer Nelson Johnson will be giving a talk
at this year's Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, Boardwalk Empire: From
Atlantic City to HBO. His nonfiction book, Boardwalk Empire: The
Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, serves as the basis for the hit
HBO series.
Because The Sopranos ruled the airwaves for the better part of the
last decade, most people associate New Jersey with a densely packed suburban
landscape in the shadow of the Big Apple. However, Atlantic City's
prohibition-era gangsters were bootlegging, gambling, heisting and murdering
decades before Tony, Silvio and Paulie hijacked their first truckload of
VCR’s. Now, Nucky Thompson and his gang are finally getting their due on
HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The hit show, renewed for a third season,
has garnered extensive critical praise, seven Emmy's and has earned South
Jersey a new place in the American cultural imagination.
Join us for a special chat with Boardwalk
Empire creator Nelson
Johnson. The talk is free and open to the public. Bootleg scotch not
included...well...maybe.
